About Wax Vinyl Records

An independent guide to vinyl records, music history and record collecting.

Wax Vinyl Records is an independent music website covering classic albums, artist histories, vinyl releases, record collecting and audio equipment. The site combines a substantial archive of music and record information with practical guides and longer-form articles exploring the recordings, artists and technology behind the music.

Originally established as an online record-selling business, Wax has developed into an editorial resource for people interested in discovering, understanding and collecting recorded music.

Forty Years of Record Collecting

Wax Vinyl Records is run by Matthew Greasley, a record collector with over 40 years of experience buying, listening to and collecting vinyl.

What began as a personal interest in records developed into a wider involvement in recorded music, including buying and selling records, researching releases and building an extensive collection.

Over the years, Matthew has sold records directly through Wax Vinyl Records, operated an established eBay store and maintained a presence on Discogs.

This experience has provided practical insight into record identification, grading, catalogue numbers, pressing variations, packaging, condition and the realities of buying and selling second-hand vinyl.

Today, Wax draws on that background to publish articles useful to collectors at different stages, from people buying their first records to experienced collectors researching particular releases.

Music Beyond the Record Collection

Matthew is also an active musician, electronic music artist, DJ and music educator.

His creative work includes electronic composition, sound design and experimental music, alongside DJ performances using vinyl records.

This continuing involvement in music provides another perspective on the material covered by Wax. Records are considered not only as collectable objects but also as recordings shaped by musicians, producers, recording studios and the technology of their time.

Matthew also publishes DJ mixes through Mixcloud, exploring music from across different genres, periods and recording traditions.

His own compositions, audiovisual projects, releases and other creative activities can be found at matthewgreasley.co.uk.

Wax Vinyl Records Today

Wax is no longer primarily an online record shop. Its focus is on publishing useful, accessible and carefully researched music content.

The site covers:

  • Classic albums and music history: the artists, recording processes, production decisions and cultural circumstances behind significant recordings.
  • Vinyl collecting: record formats, pressings, catalogue information, grading, storage and record care.
  • Buying guides: practical information about turntables, record-cleaning equipment, accessories and related products.
  • Artists and discographies: recordings, releases and the development of artists across their careers.
  • Record archives: historical catalogue information drawn from the site’s previous record-selling activities.

Historical product listings are retained for reference and do not necessarily represent records currently available to purchase.

Our aim is to help readers make informed decisions, explore unfamiliar music and understand the records they own or are considering buying.

Our Editorial Approach

Wax Vinyl Records aims to publish clear, factual and useful information.

We draw on practical experience, published sources, discographical databases, manufacturer information and other relevant references when researching articles.

Where possible, we distinguish between confirmed information and details that require further verification, particularly when discussing individual vinyl pressings and release variations.

Buying guides aim to explain the features, advantages, disadvantages and suitability of products rather than simply presenting a list of recommendations.

We do not claim to have personally tested equipment unless that testing has actually taken place. Where recommendations are based on research rather than direct experience, we aim to make that distinction clear.

Older articles are reviewed and updated as resources allow. Readers should be aware that product specifications, prices, availability and historical information can change or be corrected over time.

Affiliate Links and Independence

Some articles on Wax Vinyl Records contain affiliate links to third-party retailers. If you make a qualifying purchase through one of these links, we may receive a commission at no additional cost to you.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Affiliate income helps support the maintenance of the website, research and continued publication of new material.

Our aim is to provide information and recommendations based on relevance, usefulness and the available evidence, not simply on the availability of an affiliate commission.

Frequency State and Other Projects

Matthew also edits Frequency State, an independent publication specialising in electronic and experimental music.

Frequency State covers contemporary releases, artists, electronic music production and related creative practices.

While Wax Vinyl Records focuses on recorded music history, physical formats and collecting, Frequency State explores electronic music and the artists creating it today.

These two projects reflect a shared interest in music, recording technology and the continuing relationship between artists, listeners and the ways music is produced and distributed.

You can also explore Matthew’s personal music and audiovisual projects at matthewgreasley.co.uk.
