Art d’Ecco’s latest single, Serene Demon, dives deep into self-reflection, capturing a vivid musical and emotional journey. Opening with a delicate piano progression, the song steadily builds, adding vocal layers and a powerful arrangement that peaks in a complex, multi-melodic bridge. Co-produced by Joe Chiccarelli, Serene Demon serves as the title track for d’Ecco’s upcoming fourth album, releasing on February 14, 2025, via Paper Bag Records.
This seven-and-a-half-minute track is divided into four distinct sections, each flowing seamlessly into the next and creating a narrative that tackles existentialism, internal battles, and the seduction of darker impulses. Inspired by film noir and existentialist ideas, the song and its accompanying video reflect the struggle of facing one’s inner demons. In the video, directed by Theo Kim, d’Ecco is depicted battling his “Serene Demon,” only to emerge in time to perform, symbolizing his victory over self-doubt, anxiety, and inner turmoil.
Composing Serene Demon was an intensive process that took two months, allowing d’Ecco to craft each moment meticulously. His lyrics question good and evil, free will, and the search for purpose, making the single both intimate and grand. Following acclaimed albums like Trespasser and In Standard Definition, d’Ecco’s new work maintains his signature genre-blending style, influenced by glam rock, post-punk, and synth-pop, yet pushes boundaries in both sound and subject matter.
