Dropbear Lodge Unleash Genre-Blending Energy on “Manus”

Taken from their upcoming debut album Vicious Twee, “Manus” by Dropbear Lodge is a dynamic cut that pulls no punches in its genre-blending approach. Opening with distorted textures and low-end growls, the track quickly pivots into a tight, funk-driven groove—somewhere between jazz fusion, math rock, and post-metal—before veering off into an exploratory sax-led section that channels full-throttle experimental energy.

The arrangement refuses to stay still. Rhythmic shifts and mood changes guide the listener through moments of intensity, reflection, and improvisational chaos. Saxophone lines intertwine with an ever-morphing rhythm section, leading to atmospheric breakdowns and unpredictable turns. It’s a piece that rewards deep listening, built on structure but delivered with spontaneity.

Dropbear Lodge was founded in 2022 by Martin Kay, James Wengrow, Zac Sakrewski, and Benjamin Shannon, all seasoned musicians whose other projects include Milton Man Gogh, Shamin, Crypsis Trio, and Ensemble Sooon. Rooted in Meanjin (Brisbane), their collective background in avant-jazz, experimental rock, and improvisational music shapes the identity of the group.

Vicious Twee promises a range of complex and boundary-pushing compositions, with each band member contributing to the writing. “Manus” serves as a bold preview, highlighting the band’s technical precision and taste for sonic disruption.
