“Magnet Man” is a raw, improvisational track born from an extraordinary five-day retreat in the serene Catskill Mountains during the summer of 2018. In a rustic barn-turned-studio, five eclectic musicians, including members of Swans and Amanda Palmer, came together to create a unique musical experience that defies conventional genres. Distorted vocals, grungy guitar grooves, and feedback-driven energy merge to create an engaging and experimental vibe that resonates throughout the track.
The retreat, conceptualized by Our Silent Canvas founder and composer Christopher Bono, brought together a remarkable group of musicians for an immersive journey into spontaneous creation. Among them were Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica, known for their work with the influential post-punk band Swans, cross-disciplinary musician Anni Rossi, and acclaimed record producer Kevin McMahon. The serene environment of the Catskills and the creative energy within the barn studio became the perfect setting for crafting 39 improvisational tracks, each reflecting the diverse moods and styles of the artists involved.
“Magnet Man” stands out as a testament to the synergy and artistic exploration that defined this retreat. The track captures the essence of what happens when talented musicians come together in a space free from expectations, allowing the music to evolve organically. With contributions from special guest artists like Amanda Palmer and jazz legend Karl Berger, “Magnet Man” is a snapshot of the spontaneous creativity that can emerge in such a unique setting.
