Morning Star Music Club, the project led by Jesse D. Vernon (This Is the Kit, John Parish, The Moonflowers), returns with two new singles, Spiritual Guide and Drifting, ahead of the upcoming album Liminal Zone, set for release on April 2 via Disco-Ordination Records. This marks the band’s first album in over a decade, expanding their name to reflect the collaborative nature of the record.
Both tracks highlight the band’s soulful and reflective approach to indie-pop. Spiritual Guide opens with a laid-back yet emotive arrangement, blending indie guitars with warm, understated synth textures. The song’s introspective lyrics explore the search for meaning, wrapped in gentle vocal harmonies and a groove influenced by 50s and 60s gospel and blues.
Drifting follows with a similarly mellow feel, evoking mid-period Neil Young with its relaxed yet thoughtful atmosphere. Jesse describes the song as being in the tradition of “inquisitive backing vocal songs,” drawing comparisons to With A Little Help From My Friends.
Liminal Zone was recorded over four days in October 2023 at Paris’ Audioscope studio, produced by longtime collaborator John Parish. While Jesse D. Vernon wrote the songs and arranged most of the material, the album was shaped by the musicians involved, turning the recording sessions into an evolving creative space. The lineup features vocal harmonies from Lisa Weisslinger and Abby Tsype, alongside a mix of guitars, bass, and subtle synth work that gives the album its warm and immersive feel.
With Spiritual Guide and Drifting, Morning Star Music Club offers a glimpse into the delicate and soulful world of Liminal Zone, an album that balances thoughtful lyricism with intricate yet approachable arrangements. The album will be available on all streaming platforms from April 2, 2025.
