100 Years is the second single from Plant City, the new LP from Canadian psych-folk singer and musician Ryan Bourne. It’s a wonderful track, beginning with a simple classical guitar pattern that gradually expands and develops into a world of experimental psychedelic sounds. It’s got a little bit of the Flaming Lips about it, with some classic 60’s folk vibe thrown it to.
“I was strumming on an accidental tuning my classical guitar had relaxed into after being jostled in it’s case a while, and this lulling, droning, experimental folk thing emerged, that I think partly came out of a slight obsession at the time with Robbie Basho and John Fahey. We (Chris Dadge, Chad VanGaalen and myself) fleshed it out into a proper psych-folk dirge at Chad’s Yoko Eno Studio, adding synths, samples, even dried plant material, with Richard Gallant offering the urgent, reedy drone to the B section on a hurdy gurdy he built. The lyric came from a golden hour walk overlooking a neighborhood I’d lived and loved (and lost) in, the kind of birds eye view of the landscape lending a beautiful sense of futility to the memory as it rose.”
