Sea of Fog return with “In the Borderlands (The Wanderer & the Outcast, Pt. 3),” the first single from their forthcoming album Gone is Your Ghost, due out June 2025. This track continues the band’s reinterpretation of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, imagining an alternate path where Orpheus succeeds in retrieving Eurydice—only to grapple with their relationship decades later.
The track opens with delicate guitar arpeggios, setting an intimate tone before a flowing vocal enters, carrying the narrative forward. Subtle textures build around the arrangement, including bowed vibraphone, a harpsichord constructed by the band themselves, and even the unconventional addition of a vintage rotary telephone as a percussive and ambient sound source. The result is a blend of baroque-influenced folk, layered with a modern indie sensibility.
Musically, the piece draws inspiration from minimalist pioneers like Steve Reich while channelling melodic cues from artists such as The National. The production is restrained but detailed, allowing each layer to unfold gradually. The central lyric—“You are not the creature I thought you were”—delivers an emotional ambiguity that invites reflection and interpretation.
Sea of Fog describe their sound as “Baroque Surf Folk” and “Self-Appropriated Post-Post-Yacht Rock,” but at its core, this is an introspective piece that balances atmosphere, narrative, and carefully crafted sound design.
