THE BLUE AND THE GREY is a collection of the best loved songs of the American Civil War.  By arrangement with the BBC this LP was the later result of a 1955 radio programme which was so successful it was broadcast again only a few weeks later.  This LP is based on material used in that show, with music from the Lansdowne Orchestra, conducted by Alfred Ralston, with The George Mitchell Choir with soloists.  ‘It tells in music & song the story of the war, the people who fought in it,and of how the battles, proclamations, social events & army life helped to produce the ballads which remain to this day amongst the world’s most popular songs’.

It’s on Columbia  (Green label) 33SX 1267, the words & music adapted by Alan Yates & George Mitchell, based on traditional themes. It’s a real historical gem from 1960 & what makes this even rarer is the fact that it was engineered by the late great Joe Meek.
