Sofia Grant, a talented vocalist, pianist, and composer from London, unveils her latest track, “Ochre,” a soulful ode to the color yellow. The song opens with a funky jazz loop that sets the stage for the smooth jazz vibe to come. Sofia’s harmonious vocals, accompanied by a groovy bassline, evoke the iconic style of 70s legends like Minnie Riperton and Rotary Connection. As the track progresses, it evolves into a funkier sound while still maintaining its downtempo allure.
True to its name, “Ochre” celebrates one of the earliest-known earth pigments used by humans for self-expression. Ochre’s rich history dates back 350,000 years when it was utilized to paint caves, bodies, and homes, as well as in burial ceremonies. Comprising clay and natural materials like limonite, it boasts a distinctive burnt, sunny color, symbolizing the vibrance of the natural world and the gifts it offers when we are open to receiving them.
The track features an uplifting solo by Lya Reis Guerrero on the drums, alongside rich percussion by Ernesto Marichales. Sofia’s vocals are joined by the voices of many friends and loved ones, creating a harmonious chorus that adds depth and emotion to the song.
As part of Sofia Grant’s debut EP, “Extinction,” which is set for release on Friday 1st September 2023 on digital and 12″ vinyl formats, “Ochre” serves as the first single. The EP not only showcases Sofia’s impressive vocal performance but also marks her debut as a composer, arranger, and producer.
