Leeds’ vibrant music scene has given birth to a dynamic and promising band called The Exu, and they’re making a thrilling entrance with their debut single, “That’ll Do It!” Released on August 25th, this track showcases the band’s blend of in-the-moment improvised creativity, concise and energetic writing, and a lean rock/pop aesthetic tailored for the fast-paced digital age.
Comprising Irish bassist Dave Kane, British saxophonist James Mainwaring, and Norwegian drummer Emil Karlsen, The Exu has earned respect within the music community and captured the enthusiasm of eager audiences. The band’s name, The Exu, is a nod to the neo-expressionist New York visual artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Inspired by Basquiat’s painting “Exu,” the band’s moniker encapsulates the essence of the trickster psychopomp deity from the Yoruba religion. In Yoruba culture, this deity serves as a patron of boundaries and travelers, invoked during pivotal decision-making moments and tasked with guiding souls to the afterlife. Basquiat’s “Exu” symbolizes chaos and a disregard for established rules and conventional behavior.
