Formed in July 2019, R.J. Archer & the Painful Memories began as a one-off recording session following Richard Archer’s (guitar, vocals) prize-winning stint in a songwriting competition. With Roger James (bass) and Ben Kingsbury (drums) on board, the initial session’s success led to the band’s formal establishment. Their debut album, “Hot Mess,” released in September 2021, received positive reviews, with Rock & Roll Circus noting a “60’s R&B vibe, fused with a more contemporary feel,” and Robs Raw Music appreciating the “Powerful and tough Blues/Rock and dare I say an infusion of punk.”
The band’s reputation as a compelling live act was cemented with performances at the Cambridge Salty Dog Blues Festival and Six Six Bar. Their second album, “Horseplay!” released in September 2023, garnered further acclaim, with Music For All calling it a “practically perfect album” and drawing comparisons to legendary acts like MC5, Grand Funk Railroad, and Dr. Feelgood.
Now a four-piece with the addition of Marc Ritchie on drums and Ben Kingsbury transitioning to second guitar, R.J.
