The Library Is on Fire’s ‘Hotel Jugoslavija’ ft. Mike Watt: Grungy Energy with a Dash of Nostalgia

The Library Is on Fire returns to the music scene with their latest single, “Hotel Jugoslavija,” featuring the legendary Mike Watt on bass. After a nearly decade-long hiatus, the Brooklyn-based band from the early 2000s Williamsburg/Bushwick music scene is back with a dynamic and grungy sound that captures the essence of their indie rock roots.

“Hotel Jugoslavija” opens with intriguing textures and sound effects, setting the stage for what’s to come. As the track unfolds, it gains momentum, propelled by an unrelenting drum track that drives the energy forward. The vocals and guitars, while slightly sedate in comparison, work harmoniously to create a captivating sonic landscape. It’s a juxtaposition of elements that results in a unique and engaging listening experience.

With Mike Watt’s unmistakable bass lines, “Hotel Jugoslavija” benefits from the collaboration with a seasoned musician known for his work with The Minutemen and The Stooges. His presence adds an extra layer of depth to the track, enhancing the overall sonic tapestry created by The Library Is on Fire.

This single marks the band’s second release since their return in 2023. Having undergone a lineup change with their former bassist, Mark Shue, now part of Guided by Voices, The Library Is on Fire has welcomed a new bassist and is set to perform live in New York City this summer. Additionally, they are working on a full-length album titled “The Degeneration Elegies,” slated for release at the end of the year or early 2024. The album is produced by the band, with engineering by Todd Tobias (Guided by Voices) and mastered by Mike Tucci (Doja Cat).

The Library Is on Fire, named after French poet René Char, is the brainchild of founder Steve Five. Drawing inspiration from ’90s indie rock, the band seamlessly combines the raw guitar-driven sound of acts like Dinosaur Jr. with the lo-fi melodies reminiscent of Guided by Voices. Initially a recording project, the band evolved into a full-fledged live act with the addition of bassist Mark Shue and drummer Peter Sustarsic. Their debut album, “Cassette,” was recorded at the renowned Waterloo Studios with Todd Tobias, followed by “Magic Windows, Magic Nights” in 2010.
